I Wish Eisenhower Had Been Right

President Eisenhower (Republican; 34th President of the US) apparently said this in a letter to his brother, Edgar, in 1954:

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

The current crop of Republicans must have missed those principles of Eisenhower; there is legislation that either works to do all of the above or works to move our country closer to abolishing all of the above. The number is no longer negligible; far from never being heard of again, they are dominating the public discourse.

How I wish Eisenhower had been right.
